Let me guess. Right now as you read this article, you are probably bored, looking for any form of meager entertainment to fill the void. But instead of crying to yourself in your room as you start to befriend inanimate objects, how about you logging on to your favorite streaming service and feasting your eyes on hours of entertainment (after you finish your homework, of course)? But what to watch? Well, I’ve got you covered! Here are the best movies and TV shows to distract yourself from the apocalypse…
~ TV Shows ~
The Stranger
Released on Netflix in 2020, this (very) British mini-series is as thrilling as it is addictive. Following numerous different plotlines that all fit their way into a singular tangled web, the show frames a collection of mysteries that seem completely unrelated and unsolvable, and continues over the course of eight hour-long episodes to reveal a large conspiracy that has ensnared an upper-class British suburb. The acting is fantastic, the plot is fascinating, and after a seemingly short eight hours, you too will be raving about the endless twists and turns of The Stranger.
Dead to Me
Tightly bound together with aspects of comedy, drama, romance, and tragedy, this truly underrated series should not be overlooked. After Jen Harding (Christina Applegate) learns of her husband’s death due to a hit and run, she finds solace in a friendly new companion, Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini), but their friendship may be more sinister than it appears.
While the plot is tense and dramatic, the undeniable charm of the series’s two leading ladies hooks you in from the first episode. By far one of the best shows of 2019, Dead to Me is the kind of entertainment we need in quarantine: funny, addicting and not related to a global pandemic.
The Circle
Let’s face it, we all like a little reality TV, and since you’ve probably already seen the television trainwreck that is Love Is Blind, decompress with another great reality show in the form of The Circle. Released this year on Netflix, The Circle follows a group of people, isolated in different rooms, who are forced to compete, ally themselves, and battle against their fellow contestants using only social media.
Currently, there are three versions of the show on Netflix, taking place in America, Brazil, and France. The show’s unique concept allows for an engaging watch, full of likable cast members, fun challenges, and jaw-dropping reveals as players wield the power of cat-fishing and manipulation to win the grand prize. For reality TV lovers, this is a must-watch!

Dolemite Is My Name
This 2019 Golden Globe nominated biopic about comedian turned film star Rudy Ray Moore served as the epic return vehicle for comedy legend Eddie Murphy. A movie about loss, redemption, and comedy, you will find yourself immediately enamored with this amazing feel-good story about a down-on-his-luck comedian who seizes his opportunity and crafts his own success.
But the real secret of this movie is the all-star cast of comedic icons who band together to create a story that is not only rich with laugh-out-loud sequences and hilarious stand-up specials, but also full of heart and inspiration.
The Irishman
When this movie first came out, everyone complained that they did not have enough time to sit through its approximately three-hour runtime. Well…no one’s complaining now. This movie is a film lover’s dream\; written and directed by Martin Scorcesse, starring icons Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, The Irishman chronicles the mysterious disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa and the downfall of the Teamsters. With a near perfect script, A-class acting, and thrilling sequences, what more could you want in a movie?
The Indiana Jones Movies
With all of the Indiana Jones movies now on Netflix for streaming, it is practically our civic duty to watch these beloved classics. Steven Speilberg’s masterpiece series of adventure movies have long been a staple for film lovers everywhere, and there’s a reason for that: they are humorous, exciting, and joy-filled, with each movie better than the next. Treat yourself to these classics and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
